Naturopathic medicine practiced in Ayurveda
Avurveda is an ancient and traditional medical practice from India. It is derived from two words, Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science. The literal meaning of Ayurveda is the science of life. Ayurveda is the naturopathic medicine of India.
Ayurveda's gentle approach to health is very much in tune with the philosophies of naturopathic medicine. It is integral, taking into account the balance of the body, mind and spirit on the overall picture of health. Because of this holistic view point of health, a person who doesn't have any physical complaints but is unhappy and troubled mentally is considered unhealthy.
Ayurvedic practitioner Partap Chauhan writes on his JivaAryuveda web site (www.ayurveda.org) "Problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia, originate mainly from sickness of mind and soul. Unfortunately, most of our actions and activities today are related to materialism and our physical body."
"We rarely pay attention to our other half, which is equally important.the mind and the soul. The diets and lifestyles we follow for achieving peace and happiness may not be healthy for our inner selves. Since we are no longer taught the importance of mental and spiritual health.we remain unhappy, depressed, anxious and insecure, despite our best efforts."
"This is clearly indicative of something being wrong in our approach. Ayurveda helps us in our endeavor to find happiness in life by teaching us the appropriate lifestyles to adopt. It teaches us how to live in natural balance by following the right diet, daily regimen, lifestyle, actions and activities."
Ayurveda, like naturopathic medicine, uses herbs, diet, body work, essential oils, and detoxifying treatments to help the body heal itself. Ayurveda is centered around the energies of the body, particularly digestive energy.
Despite being completely foreign to the medical paradigm of the average westerner, many Ayurvedic principles have been borrowed by naturopathic medicine practitioners. They trust Ayurveda because of its age-old wisdom, efficacy and non invasive, holistic treatments.
Naturopathic medicine and the Ayurvedic doshas
Just like naturopathic medicine, Ayurveda believes in customizing the treatment to the unique constitution of each patient. There is no one size fits all tendency in the Ayurvedic paradigm.
"The basis of Ayurvedic philosophy is the belief that there is an intelligence in each of us, like a river of knowledge, stemming from the ocean of Universal Consciousness. This intelligence orchestrates the body's many functions which operate in conjunction with the five basic elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. In the body, these elements combine into three characteristic humors or doshas: vata (ether and air), pita (fire and water), and kapha (water and earth.)
Ayurvedic medicine helps us understand these doshas, thereby stimulating our inner intelligence and activating our own unlimited healing potential. Each of us is born with a unique combination of vata, pita, and kapha. This combination is known in Ayurveda as our psychosomatic constitution (prakriti)." The science of Ayurveda
Ayurveda, like naturopathic medicine, is not just based in wisdom passed down from our ancestors but also verified by modern scientific and medical research. Much of the efficacy of Ayurveda has been confirmed in medical journals such as Lancet and the British Medical Journal.
While Ayurveda can treat any condition, illness or disease, it is especially effective in the treatment of allergies, hepatitis, asthma, diabetes, insomnia, anxiety, obesity, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, neurological disorders, digestive disorders, hypertension liver, depression, and ulcers.
Naturopathic medicine and Ayurveda: complimentary medicines
"Like Ayurveda, naturopathic medicine promotes the body's own unlimited healing ability. To do this, it utilizes herbs, vitamins, minerals, and exercise. Natural cleansing procedures are also used to clear the body of accumulated toxins. Combining Ayurvedic treatment with naturopathic medicine, as well as other healing systems such as acupuncture and soft tissue manipulation has shown effective and successful results."
